Thinking outside the box

Much as I like my iPhone, when it comes to computers I am a long time PC guy. As an artist I haven’t seen a compelling reason to consider switching; as someone who knows more than a little about operating systems and hardware I’m always moderately annoyed by the smug and misleading “I’m a mac” commercials. So I have to admit to a small amount of glee at seeing this post on Joe Strazzere’s All Things Quality.

    Glad you like it!

If only I could draw – then I’d really be dangerous…

A question: Why is it that when people use both (as I do) and prefer Macs, they are “religious fanatics,” whereas people who dis Macs when they don’t use them are somehow considered more “sensible?”
You’re perfectly entitled to like PCs — even as an artist, which I have to say is unusual among my many artist friends — and Windows has improved vastly, which helps. But I’ve used both Macs and PCs for over twenty years, and the Mac has consistently been easier to use, built sturdier machines, and since OS X has been amazingly robust. They screwed up with this release of Snow Leopard, agreed, but in the first seven years of OS X I never — that’s NEVER — had a system crash or kernel panic. And they started building OS X after “Longhorn” got started, then released it did half a dozen updates before Vista came out! You gotta pay some respect here.
Not that I disagree with the need to keep Apple on their toes once in a while, lest they get too smug!
Keep up the good work, David. Love the strip, and am proud owner of Artist’s Edition #9. When’s the next one coming out?

Too bad Joe Strazzere doesn’t let facts get in the way of a sensationalist post. Sensationalism drives hits, facts be damned. At least he provided a bunch of links, if you are interested in what really is the situation that cause this problem. It is a major problem, but only affects a very, very small number of users

(He can take consolation that he is in the majority on the web.)

    qka,

??? Sensationalist post versus facts? Me?
Did I write something that wasn’t factual? If so, please let me know so that I can correct it.

I don’t recall writing that it affected a large number of users. Let me go back and check… Nope.

Was it the pictures? You don’t like the pictures? (I thought they were fun)

    Haha that was funny!

I don’t think I’m a sensationalist. But if I am, at least realize that I’m an equal-opportunity sensationalist.

Here’s an older post for your enjoyment:

Newsflash: they are *already* UNBEARABLY smug. I can’t stand their stupid “Hi I’m a PC” ads anymore. It’s been 3 years of those ads, come on, get over it and do something else that encourages people to try out Macs, instead of dissing the competitor. These ads have absolutely no informative value. As it is, Apple shows a blatant lack of creativity (ironic, eh?) each time they put out yet another one of those ads. L-A-M-E.

As for the rest of your comment, I have absolutely nothing against you or others that work BOTH with Mac and PC and prefer the former. You are not a religious fanatic, those who have never used Windows and bitch about how their platform of choice is superior are the insufferable ones.

For the record: I was once a Mac user, up to a decade ago. I left the flock because at that time, MacOS was desperately outdated and kept crashing on my machine, Copland had been canned, and Jobs had come back and shafted the clone-makers. History showed that was the right decision for Apple’s survival, but I felt it was an incredibly sh*ty way to treat business partners. Hardware was sub-par compared to PCs. No, Macs have not been always great. And now? I use Windows because I have to, but I prefer Ubuntu Linux! :-P
